Apollo 17 Discovery of Orange Soil

Discovery of orange soil on the moon by astronaut Jack Schmitt (with Gene Cernan) during the Apollo 17 mission. Large panorama assembled with individual pictures of the lunar rover TV camera. The pixel resolution of TV camera is very low and numerous parts of the panorama are re-constructed with stamp tool.

Lunar rover camera after departure of the Apollo 17 LM

After liftoff of Lunar module "Challenger" (14 december 1972) the color television camera mounted on the front of the Lunar Rover could be remotely operated by Mission Control. This allowed far better television coverage of the EVA than the earlier missions.
