The Mercury Seven were the group of seven Mercury astronauts selected by NASA on April 9, 1959. They are also referred to as the Original Seven or Astronaut Group 1. They piloted the manned spaceflights of the Mercury program from May 1961 to May 1963. These seven original American astronauts were Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, and Deke Slayton (not on picture). Explorer 1 (January 31, 1958)

Explorer 1 was the first satellite launched by the United States when it was sent into space on January 31, 1958. The primary science instrument on Explorer 1 was a cosmic ray detector designed to measure the radiation environment in Earth orbit. the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Agency was directed to launch a satellite using its Jupiter C rocket developed under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun.Once in space this experiment, provided by Dr. James Van Allen of the University of Iowa, revealed a much lower cosmic ray count than expected.

Gemini IX-A launch (June 1966)

The mission was flown June 3-6, 1966 by backup command pilot Thomas P. Stafford and pilot Eugene Cernan. The astronauts rendezvoused with the Augmented Target Docking Adaptor. Panorama extracted from 16mm tower camera.

1959 USAF production served the purpose of providing ballistic missile orientation to Strategic Air Command officers. The SM-65 Atlas was the first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) developed and deployed by the United States.

Lunar rover camera after departure of the Apollo 17 LM

After liftoff of Lunar module "Challenger" (14 december 1972) the color television camera mounted on the front of the Lunar Rover could be remotely operated by Mission Control. This allowed far better television coverage of the EVA than the earlier missions.

Mercury Little Joe 2 (LJ-2) - 1959 December 4

Mercury Little Joe 2 (LJ-2) - LJ-2 was launched from Wallops Island to determine the motions of the spacecraft escape tower combination during a high-altitude abort, entry dynamics without a control system, physiological effects of acceleration on a small primate, operation of the drogue parachute, and effectiveness of the recovery operation. Telemetry was set up to record some 80 bits of information on the flight. The abort sequence was initiated by timers after 59 seconds of elapsed flight time at an altitude of about 96,000 feet and a speed of Mach 5.5. Escape motor firing occurred as planned and the spacecraft was whisked away at a speed of about Mach 6 to an apogee of 53.03 statute miles. All other sequences operated as planned, and spacecraft recovery was effected in about 2 hours from lift-off. The primate passenger, 'Sam,' an American-born rhesus monkey, withstood the trip and the recovery in good condition. The first film appearance of Charles "Charlie" Chaplin's character, The Tramp. Note that this was not the first time Chaplin donned the famous costume - that occurred for the filming of Mabel's Strange Predicament, Kid Auto Races at Venice was released on February 7th, 1914.
